The scale of these incidents has widened significantly, with total financial exposure reaching $124.1 million. While the number of attacks rose from 39 to 52 year-over-year, the average exposure per incident surged from $270,000 to $2.39 million. Researchers note that this figure includes stolen funds, ransom demands, and frozen assets, serving as an indicator of criminal pressure rather than confirmed losses.
Europe emerged as the primary theater for these crimes, accounting for 75% of global activity. France alone recorded 33 incidents, representing over 60% of the worldwide total. Local authorities have responded with aggressive investigations, charging 88 suspects across 12 separate cases by late April. The nature of these crimes has also evolved; home invasions rose from a single reported case in the first half of 2025 to 20 incidents this year, effectively becoming the most common method for extorting private keys.
