Daily market volume surged from $50 million at the start of the year to $250 million once matches commenced on June 11. By the final game between Spain and Argentina, daily trading topped $300 million. While U.S. and Chinese users accounted for the largest shares of activity, Chainalysis noted that geolocation data remains estimates, as VPNs and privacy tools often obscure true wallet residency. Participation spanned every continent, excluding Antarctica, signaling a global shift toward onchain event-based wagering.

World Cup Prediction Markets Hit $20 Billion in Blockchain Volume
The 2026 FIFA World Cup served as a massive stress test for decentralized finance, driving $20 billion in prediction-market volume between January and the tournament’s conclusion. Chainalysis data reveals that activity peaked during the final match, with over 400,000 unique wallets participating in event-based betting contracts.

Beyond betting, FIFA’s official digital collectibles platform, FIFA Collect, processed $24 million in trades. The platform utilized an Avalanche-based infrastructure to link digital assets with match tickets, providing stadium access to more than 100,000 fans. FIFA reportedly generated at least $6 million in revenue from secondary market fees. Security analysis showed that less than 1% of participating wallets had ties to illicit activity, such as funds originating from sanctioned entities like Huobi or HTX. Despite the record-breaking figures, the long-term viability of these prediction markets depends on whether these users remain active now that the tournament has ended, and how regulators respond to the rapid expansion of event-contract volumes.
