Argus Launches SAF Emissions Reduction Indexes and Analytics Calculator

Aviation market participants now have a standardized way to measure the economic viability of sustainable aviation fuel against carbon market obligations. Argus has introduced new emissions reduction indexes and a custom calculator designed to help airlines and fuel suppliers navigate the complexities of regional decarbonization costs and Scope 3 reporting.

The new indexes provide independent benchmarks for Europe, Asia, and the US, specifically measuring the net cost of using hydrotreated esters and fatty acids synthetic paraffinic kerosene (HEFA-SPK). By normalizing fuel prices on an energy-equivalent basis, these assessments allow firms to compare SAF premiums directly against the costs of compliance in the EU emissions trading system or voluntary carbon markets like Corsia.

To support these data points, Argus released an Excel-based tool that enables subscribers to model company-specific procurement scenarios. The calculator integrates regional incentives and operational costs, providing a framework for firms to negotiate the allocation of environmental attributes between buyers and sellers. According to Adrian Binks, chairman and chief executive of Argus, the initiative aims to clarify the shifting relationship between fuel pricing and the increasing regulatory pressures facing the aviation industry.
