FBI Agent Accused of Stealing $1M in Crypto and Consulting ChatGPT

Federal prosecutors allege that Yaroch exploited his position within the FBI’s Counterintelligence and Espionage Division to gain access to private keys for digital wallets labeled as "adversarial cryptocurrency accounts." Beginning in late 2024, he reportedly executed roughly a dozen transfers to move these assets into his personal accounts. Following his discovery, Yaroch admitted to Department of Justice employees that he had made "some very poor decisions" regarding the wallets, describing his actions as a serious mistake.

Investigations revealed that Yaroch used ChatGPT to navigate his next steps, inputting personal details about his family and his desire for a wine-growing estate to solicit advice on where to relocate. The chatbot suggested Portugal, a destination Yaroch seemingly acted upon by booking a flight scheduled for September 3. While the court filing notes that the AI was unaware the assets were stolen, the digital trail of his search history and the purchase of an international ticket became central pieces of evidence for investigators.

The FBI dismissed Yaroch on July 31, one day before the formal affidavit was filed. He currently faces charges of interstate transportation of stolen goods and the receipt of stolen property. His case stands out from recent technical exploits in the crypto sector, highlighting a rare instance of insider theft where an official allegedly bypassed internal custody protocols for personal profit.
