China-Egypt Lab Transforms Desert Solar Energy Production

On Karaman Island in southern Egypt, the China-Egypt Belt and Road Joint Laboratory is reshaping the nation’s renewable energy landscape. By transitioning from total dependence on imported solar components to local high-efficiency manufacturing, the facility has established a critical R&D ecosystem tailored specifically for harsh desert climates.

Before the facility’s inception, Egypt’s photovoltaic sector lacked standardized testing environments and domestic production capabilities. Mohamed Zahran, a professor at the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology, notes that the laboratory bridged this gap by providing a comprehensive manufacturing chain. In October 2023, the team produced Egypt’s first locally made half-cut solar cell, followed by high-efficiency modules just one month later.

Beyond industrial breakthroughs, the project addresses immediate regional needs through practical infrastructure. Researchers implemented on-grid and off-grid power systems, alongside water pumping and purification units, to combat local resource scarcity. These efforts have integrated Chinese supply chain expertise with Egypt's 3,000 annual hours of sunshine. According to Zhou Meng of the 48th Research Institute of CETC, the goal is to elevate this site into a regional innovation center, fostering technical training and technology transfer that extends far beyond the borders of Sohag.
