Zeus Wallet Shuts Down Infrastructure Following Cybersecurity Breach

Zeus Wallet has pulled its infrastructure offline to conduct a comprehensive security audit after suffering a targeted cyberattack. While the company confirmed that no customer funds were compromised, the self-custodial Bitcoin Lightning provider has yet to establish a timeline for when services will return to normal operation.

Founder Evan Kaloudis stated that investigators currently believe the breach was contained within the wallet’s own internal systems, rather than stemming from vulnerabilities in Lightning node software. For users whose Lightning Service Provider channels were closed during the incident, Zeus has promised to facilitate replacements once the platform is restored. Until that time, the company is directing affected customers to its mobile app help section, though it warned that response times will likely lag due to the high volume of support requests.

The outage follows a separate, unrelated suspension of swap functionality on the platform, triggered by the recent shutdown of the non-custodial provider Boltz. These back-to-back disruptions occur against a backdrop of heightened scrutiny across the Bitcoin ecosystem. Developers and security researchers have accelerated reviews of open-source projects following a series of high-profile thefts linked to firmware flaws in Coldcard hardware wallets. That separate investigation, which saw approximately 1,596 BTC stolen in confirmed waves, has prompted a massive volunteer-led audit of hundreds of Bitcoin-related repositories. As the industry grapples with these vulnerabilities, Zeus remains focused on integrating trusted execution environments to harden its infrastructure against future intrusions.
