XRP Ledger 3.3.0 Release Sets Stage for Protocol Upgrades
XRP Ledger developers released xrpld version 3.3.0 on August 6, packaging a suite of protocol enhancements for potential mainnet deployment. While the software update introduces advanced privacy and transaction tools, these features remain dormant until they secure the necessary support from network validators through the formal amendment process.
The new release introduces four primary capabilities: ConfidentialTransfer, BatchV1_1, Sponsor, and DynamicMPT. ConfidentialTransfer aims to shield Multi-Purpose Token balances and transfer amounts while maintaining compliance pathways for authorized auditors. BatchV1_1 restores atomic transaction functionality, allowing multiple actions across different accounts to settle simultaneously—a correction to a previous iteration that was halted due to security concerns.
Sponsor enables third parties to cover transaction fees and reserves, potentially simplifying user onboarding, while DynamicMPT provides token issuers with the flexibility to modify specific token properties post-issuance. These additions reflect a broader institutional shift within the ecosystem, building on previous collaborative testing involving firms like JPMorgan and Ripple.
Governance dictates the actual implementation timeline. Under XRPL rules, any amendment requires sustained support from more than 80% of trusted validators for a two-week window. The software release acts as a prerequisite for this process rather than an automatic activation. Node operators must now evaluate the code, and past instances—such as the rejection of earlier buggy versions of Batch and Permission Delegation—demonstrate that inclusion in a software release does not guarantee production status. Consequently, these tools remain in the proposal phase, awaiting consensus from the network's decentralized governing body.
