San Diego-based Neurocrine Biosciences has moved its investigational drug NBIP-'1968 into Phase 1 clinical trials. The experimental treatment, designed for once-weekly injection, targets three distinct metabolic pathways to regulate appetite and energy balance, marking a significant expansion of the company’s growing metabolic disease pipeline.

The initial study will assess the safety and tolerability of single ascending doses in adult participants across various body mass index categories. Unlike traditional monotherapies, the drug acts on receptors for GLP-1, GIP, and glucagon simultaneously. Scientists at the company engineered the compound with balanced glucagon activity to potentially preserve lean body mass while promoting weight loss, a common challenge in current obesity therapies.

This trial is part of a broader strategic shift at Neurocrine to address complex metabolic conditions. The company intends to eventually pair NBIP-'1968 with another asset in its portfolio, NBIP-'2118, a corticotropin-releasing factor type 2 receptor agonist currently in early-stage development. By combining these mechanisms, the firm aims to create a fixed-dose treatment that addresses the biological drivers of obesity beyond simple caloric restriction.
