CB&I Hits Milestone in Large-Scale Liquid Hydrogen Storage
At NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center, CB&I has completed the first fill of a 20-cubic-meter liquid hydrogen tank, marking a critical test for non-vacuum insulation technology. The project aims to slash capital costs for hydrogen storage by moving away from traditional, more expensive vacuum-based systems in industrial applications.

Yogesh Meher, CB&I’s Vice President of Engineering, noted that the successful fill validates a more cost-effective pathway for the hydrogen economy. The new tank triples the facility's total storage capacity, allowing for both higher throughput and longer-duration tests. This initiative draws on CB&I’s six-decade history with cryogenic storage, a legacy that includes constructing the world’s largest liquid hydrogen sphere for NASA’s Artemis program in 2022.
