Justin Hundich, president of Hundich Landscape Services, emphasizes that these systems serve distinct hydrological functions. A French drain acts as a subsurface collector, utilizing a perforated pipe within a gravel trench to manage groundwater, high water tables, or runoff pooling in low-lying areas. It targets water moving through the soil itself, rather than water directed from a specific point source.
Conversely, an underground downspout extension manages concentrated roof runoff. By connecting directly to gutter systems, these pipes transport water away from the home’s foundation to a safer discharge point. Relying on a French drain to handle heavy gutter discharge often overwhelms the system, while installing a downspout extension will do nothing to alleviate saturated soil caused by poor grading or high water tables.
