Carpenter Designs Curved Platen to Solve Belt Sander Gouging

Frustrated by the tendency of standard flat-bottom belt sanders to gouge rounded wood, a Minnesota finish carpenter has developed a curved platen attachment. The patent-pending design allows the abrasive belt to conform to concave surfaces, aiming to eliminate the common errors inherent in traditional sanding methods for curved furniture.

The inventor, based in Isanti, sought a way to simplify high-quality finishing on non-flat surfaces without risking permanent damage to the workpiece. By replacing the standard flat base with a curved interface, the device provides the necessary geometry to reach into rounded areas. This modification reduces the manual labor usually required to avoid uneven sanding or accidental divots.

Designed for both professional contractors and hobbyists, the component prioritizes durability and ease of attachment. A working prototype currently demonstrates the concept, which is now being marketed to tool manufacturers for potential licensing. The project, designated as CHK-6002, is represented by the Pittsburgh-based firm InventHelp.
