Why Most Boat Buyers Ignore Traditional Sales Leads

Only 21% of marine shoppers submit a formal lead before finalizing a purchase, according to new research from Boats Group. By cross-referencing 85,000 verified state registrations with digital platform data, the study reveals that the vast majority of consumers move through the market anonymously, frequently abandoning their initial boat preferences.

Why Most Boat Buyers Ignore Traditional Sales Leads

The recreational marine industry has long relied on lead volume as a primary performance metric, but the data suggests this strategy misses the mark. Claire Look, Head of Data at Boats Group, notes that the industry has traditionally focused on pre-lead activity while remaining blind to the complex behavioral shifts that occur afterward. The research highlights a non-linear path where buyers often start with a used-boat inquiry only to end up purchasing a new vessel. In fact, only 15% of buyers ultimately purchase the specific boat they initially inquired about.

This volatility in consumer intent suggests that current attribution models fail to capture the full impact of digital marketing. Because buyers frequently change brands, price points, and categories during their research, manufacturers and dealers must maintain a presence across the entire journey rather than focusing on a single point of contact. By shifting focus from simple lead generation to comprehensive journey tracking, companies can better align their marketing strategies with the reality of how modern boaters make decisions.
