Erebor Bank eyes $9.5B valuation in massive funding push

Columbus-based Erebor Bank is closing in on a $1.5 billion capital raise at an $8 billion pre-money valuation. The deal, which would push the lender’s post-money valuation toward $9.5 billion, arrives just six months after the startup secured its national bank charter to serve the U.S. innovation economy.

The fundraising effort has attracted significant interest from a roster of high-profile backers, including Lux Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, and Valor Equity Partners. Existing investors 8VC and Haun Ventures are also expected to participate in the round. While the bank has declined to comment on the talks, the valuation reflects a rapid ascent from its previous $4.35 billion price tag.

Regulatory filings underscore the momentum behind these negotiations. Deposits at the crypto-friendly institution surged from $1.1 billion in March to $4.06 billion by the end of June, with reports indicating a climb to $4.6 billion by late July. This growth is critical as the bank navigates a stringent regulatory environment: the FDIC mandates a 12% Tier 1 leverage ratio for the bank's first three years, a threshold significantly higher than that of traditional commercial lenders.

Beyond deposit gathering, Erebor is actively deploying capital into the industrial sector. The bank recently served as the administrative agent for a $200 million credit facility for Valar Atomics, working alongside JPMorgan and Hercules Capital. This move aligns with its broader mandate to support capital-intensive fields like defense, artificial intelligence, and advanced manufacturing. As Comptroller Jonathan Gould signals a continued push for de novo bank formation, Erebor’s ability to bridge digital asset services with federal banking standards positions it as a test case for integrating emerging tech sectors into the national financial system.
