CFTC Innovation Advisory Committee to Tackle Crypto and AI Policy

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission has scheduled a three-hour inaugural meeting for August 20 to address the shifting landscape of digital assets, artificial intelligence, and prediction markets. This session marks the first formal gathering of the agency's Innovation Advisory Committee as it navigates the intersection of emerging technology and financial regulation.

Committee members will convene in Washington for the 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. EDT session, which remains open to the public via virtual broadcast. While the commission has not signaled immediate votes on new rules, the committee’s mandate is to provide expert insight on the "new frontier of finance" to help the agency calibrate its oversight. Chairman Michael S. Selig, who sponsors the group, has assembled a panel of entrepreneurs and researchers to advise on how these technologies impact market integrity.

Regulatory pressure is mounting as Congress debates expanding the commission’s authority to include digital commodity spot markets. Currently, the agency manages a $365 million budget and a staff of 556, a footprint significantly smaller than the SEC’s. Beyond digital assets, the committee faces the complex task of reconciling federal derivatives jurisdiction with state-level challenges regarding prediction markets. Simultaneously, the commission is reviewing its own internal use of AI for trading data analysis and registration oversight, raising questions about accountability and data safeguards. Interested parties have until August 27 to submit written statements for the public record.
