Unlike the current system, which relies on onchain voting transactions, Alpenglow utilizes Votor and BLS signatures to aggregate thousands of validator votes into compact certificates. Solana Targets October for Alpenglow Consensus Upgrade
Solana is preparing to replace its current TowerBFT consensus with Alpenglow, a new design aimed at slashing transaction finality from 12.8 seconds to roughly 150 milliseconds. While speculation previously suggested a September launch, the Solana Foundation now points to an October target via the Agave 4.3 release.

Preparations for the switch are already underway. Agave 4.2, released in August, includes the necessary code for testing and hardening, though it is not intended for mainnet consensus activation. To ensure stability, the development firm Anza has launched a security bug bounty program with a prize pool reaching 50,000 SOL. Before the full migration occurs, the network is also initiating a separate reduction in slot times from 400 milliseconds to 200 milliseconds, scheduled to begin in mid-August. While shorter finality will provide exchanges and payment processors with faster economic irreversibility, the Foundation maintains that the October rollout depends strictly on the results of ongoing alpha testing and validator readiness.
