Sandisk Perpetual Futures Surge to $1.73 Billion in Open Interest

Sandisk-linked perpetual futures have secured their position as the crypto market’s largest equity-based derivatives product, with aggregate open interest hitting $1.73 billion as of August 17 across 32 tracked platforms, signaling a rapid expansion in synthetic exposure to traditional assets.

Trading intensity has spiked alongside this growth, with 24-hour volume for SNDK perpetuals reaching $2.51 billion. This figure represents a 248% increase over the previous day, placing the asset fourth in global perpetual volume behind only Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana. The surge dwarfs comparable interest in other equity-linked contracts, with SK Hynix (SKHX) at $1.35 billion and SpaceX (SPCX) at $967.7 million.

This derivatives activity follows a strong performance in the underlying Sandisk equity, which closed at $1,641.11 on August 14 following a 7.37% daily gain. While corporate updates—including a $20.25 billion annual revenue report and a $14 billion share repurchase authorization—have bolstered investor sentiment, no single event directly explains the localized spike in derivative positioning. Institutional presence remains notable; Jane Street Group disclosed a 5% beneficial ownership stake in Sandisk on August 5, though the firm noted the position was not intended to influence corporate control.

Market participants are currently monitoring whether SNDK can sustain its lead as capital rotates between equity contracts. Analysts caution that high open interest measures outstanding positions on both sides of the trade rather than a singular bullish or bearish outlook. Furthermore, these perpetuals function as synthetic price trackers, offering no voting rights or dividends, a distinction that grows more critical as daily volume for the contracts reaches multi-billion dollar levels.
