Physik Instrumente Launches High-Load Ring-Type PZT Actuators

Engineers seeking to integrate nanometer-scale motion into compact optical or mechanical systems now have access to a new class of ring-type PZT actuators from Physik Instrumente. By featuring an unobstructed central aperture, these components allow for coaxial routing of optical fibers, probes, and fluidic channels while maintaining high force capacity.

The PICA-Through line bridges the gap between traditional linear piezo stacks and standard tube actuators. Unlike solid stacks, these units incorporate a through-hole, enabling motion to be generated directly around an optical or mechanical axis. This design reduces system footprint and simplifies complex cable and beam paths in high-precision environments, including semiconductor manufacturing, microscopy, and adaptive optics.

Physik Instrumente offers twelve standard variants across three outer diameters—10, 16, and 25 mm—with inner diameters scaled accordingly. The technology is capable of reaching travel ranges of up to 80 µm and blocking forces as high as 9,600 N, with stiffness ratings peaking at 580 N/µm. Because the actuators operate without gears or bearings, they eliminate backlash and particle generation, ensuring reliability in demanding scientific and industrial instrumentation. Vacuum-compatible options are also available to support specialized research and production requirements.
