Somerville Achieves Three-Year Traffic Fatality Milestone

Somerville has recorded zero fatal crashes for three consecutive years, cementing its status as a national leader in Vision Zero initiatives. A recent LivableStreets Alliance report credits this safety milestone to a combination of lower speed limits, infrastructure redesigns, and a targeted approach to managing critical urban curb space.

Somerville Achieves Three-Year Traffic Fatality Milestone

The 2026 Vision Zero Progress Report, which analyzed crash data from 2015 through 2025 across Somerville, Boston, and Cambridge, highlights a 50% drop in serious injury crashes within Somerville during 2025. City officials attribute these gains to consistent political support and cross-departmental coordination, complemented by strategic investments in traffic-calming measures and community engagement.

Central to the city's operational strategy is the enforcement of restricted zones. Since 2023, Somerville has utilized AI-powered SafetyStick technology from Municipal Parking Services to monitor bus stops and restricted areas. By automating the detection of illegal parking, the system ensures that crosswalks, bike lanes, and emergency access routes remain clear. While serious crashes involving bicyclists remain a persistent challenge, the city’s ability to keep transit corridors accessible has become a core component of its broader safety framework.
