Founder Pavel Durov announced the submission via social media, outlining a vision where users could generate hosted websites using a single prompt. While the proposal aims to integrate these addresses directly into the Telegram ecosystem, the company has yet to clarify the underlying technology, pricing models, or how these domains would interface with existing usernames. The initiative marks a significant expansion of Telegram’s infrastructure, moving beyond its traditional messenger and Mini App framework toward broader internet hosting.

Telegram seeks .gram domain to power user-built websites
Telegram has filed an application with ICANN to operate the .gram top-level domain, a move that could grant more than one billion monthly active users the ability to register personal web addresses and launch interactive sites through the messaging platform.

Securing the .gram extension is far from guaranteed. The request currently sits within ICANN’s 2026 New Generic Top-Level Domain Program, which requires a rigorous evaluation of technical capabilities and registry operations. Successful applicants must pass multiple compliance reviews and sign a formal registry agreement before their domain can be delegated to the internet’s root zone. Telegram has not disclosed its choice of registry service provider or a timeline for potential deployment. The choice of the name carries historical weight, echoing the original cryptocurrency project Telegram abandoned in 2020, which has recently seen its native token rebranded to GRAM by the community-led Open Network.
