Aid Groups Reject Israeli Military Closure of Gaza Death Probes

Seven aid workers from World Central Kitchen and 15 staff members from Médecins Sans Frontières are dead, yet the Israeli military has shuttered investigations into the strikes that killed them. Both organizations are now demanding an independent, impartial body to hold those responsible for the attacks accountable.

Aid Groups Reject Israeli Military Closure of Gaza Death Probes

The Israeli military advocate general’s decision to close the cases without pursuing criminal investigations arrived as little surprise to humanitarian groups, who characterize the internal review as a conflict of interest. Médecins Sans Frontières, or Doctors Without Borders, stated that the military apparatus cannot credibly investigate its own conduct, particularly regarding strikes on clearly identified humanitarian vehicles. The organization noted that the locations and identities of its staff were shared with authorities, yet vehicles were still targeted in incidents like the November 2023 convoy strike in Gaza City and the February 2024 shelter bombing in Khan Younis.

World Central Kitchen echoed these concerns, calling the military’s account of the April 2024 airstrikes that killed seven of its staff "deeply offensive" and inconsistent with the truth. The group emphasized that their team was unarmed, traveling through a deconflicted zone, and under full visual clarity when the multiple strikes occurred. Both organizations argue that these closures are part of a broader pattern of impunity in Gaza, where tens of thousands of Palestinians have been killed and critical infrastructure, including hospitals and schools, has been systematically destroyed.
