Changpeng Zhao Calls for Global Tokenization to Drive Capital Flow

Binance founder Changpeng Zhao is urging nations and corporations to embrace widespread tokenization as a primary tool for attracting foreign direct investment. By converting shares, bonds, and property into digital assets, he argues that issuers can bypass traditional barriers, granting global investors seamless access to localized capital markets.

On August 21, Zhao advocated for a multi-chain approach to this digital expansion. While acknowledging that deploying assets across various blockchains risks fragmenting market liquidity, he maintains that parallel development remains the most efficient path to sector growth. He suggests that enhanced interchangeability between issuers could eventually mitigate these technical divides, though he offered no specific standard for such integration.

This push for tokenization arrives as BNB Chain reports a significant surge in real-world asset (RWA) engagement, with approximately 776,000 holders recorded by August 19. Despite this rapid growth, legal experts emphasize that tokenized shares remain securities. Under existing regulatory frameworks, including those upheld by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, these digital representations must strictly adhere to established laws governing disclosures, custody, and secondary trading. Zhao’s remarks serve as a broad industry vision rather than a formal roadmap, leaving the practical implementation—and the complex task of reconciling cross-border investment definitions—to individual governments and regulatory bodies.
