Jacob Creech, vice president of technology at the Solana Foundation, confirmed the shift on August 21, declaring the arrival of a new era for the blockchain. While the network originally launched with a 400ms target, current data indicates actual slot times are already tracking near 360ms. This transition is not a singular event; it represents the first of four planned reductions—moving next to 300ms, then 250ms, and finally 200ms.
The implementation strategy prioritizes stability. By activating each stage separately, the foundation allows validator operators and client developers to monitor network performance before proceeding. This cautious approach is critical, as reducing slot times necessitates a proportional adjustment of network resource limits. For instance, the per-slot compute-unit limit drops from the original 60 million to 52.5 million at the 350ms setting, ensuring that processing demands remain balanced even as blocks are produced more rapidly.
