The Silent Protest: How Clutter Defines Modern Household Tension

Nearly 4 in 10 households are currently engaged in a silent protest, leaving belongings scattered in hopes that others will clear them away. This domestic friction is a central finding of the IKEA Store & Organise Report 2026, which surveyed over 31,000 people across 31 global markets to understand the psychology of mess.

The Silent Protest: How Clutter Defines Modern Household Tension

The kitchen countertop remains the primary battleground for domestic order, identified by 24% of respondents as the most difficult area to maintain and the most frequent source of arguments. The frustration has led to desperate storage habits; one in ten people now use their ovens to hide clutter, a figure that jumps to 21% among households in South Korea.

Despite the tension, the report reveals a cultural pivot away from sterile minimalism. About 59% of participants now prefer a lived-in environment, viewing their possessions as an extension of their personal history. This sentiment explains why 82% of people retain items solely for sentimental value, even when those objects remain permanently out of sight. Licca Li, Home Furnishing & Retail Design Manager at Ingka Group, notes that people are no longer chasing perfection, but rather a space that reflects their individual stories.

Deep-seated habits persist, however. Roughly 68% of households maintain a "drawer of doom" filled with relics, such as the cables kept by 54% of Boomer men for long-obsolete gadgets. The anxiety surrounding these spaces is significant enough that 10% of people have cancelled social plans to avoid exposing their homes to guests. While 34% resort to frantic tidying before visitors arrive, some have embraced the chaos, with 31% of respondents in China viewing mess as a legitimate form of creative expression.
