The researchers analyzed data from 3,339 mother-child pairs across 20 U.S. medical centers to investigate the potential impact of organophosphate pesticides. While these chemicals are known to interfere with insect nervous systems and have been linked in previous research to IQ loss or ADHD, their relationship to autism remained ambiguous. Urine samples taken during pregnancy showed that 99% of mothers had detectable levels of pesticide metabolites, yet children’s scores on the Social Responsiveness Scale at ages 5 to 7 showed no significant correlation with this exposure.

Study Finds No Link Between Prenatal Pesticide Exposure and Autism Traits
Prenatal exposure to common agricultural insecticides does not appear to increase the risk of social communication challenges or other traits associated with autism, according to a comprehensive study led by researchers at NYU Langone Health and published in JAMA Pediatrics.

Lead author Haleigh Cavalier noted that while the findings suggest these pesticides are not a primary driver of autism-related traits at common exposure levels, the results do not classify the substances as safe. The study team, part of the National Institutes of Health’s ECHO Program, accounted for various environmental and biological factors, marking the most diverse assessment of this topic to date. Senior author Akhgar Ghassabian indicated that the team plans to expand their investigation to include other environmental toxins, such as microplastics, and their potential interaction with genetic markers tied to neurodevelopmental conditions.
