Automotive Industry Group Issues New Guidance on Packaging Circularity

Executive Director Kellen Mahoney noted that the initiative focuses on the entire lifecycle of packaging, from initial design to final recovery. By prioritizing methods that extend material life, the guidance seeks to help firms identify practical adjustments for their specific operations. Success in these circular efforts, the report warns, relies heavily on robust logistics systems—including collection, sorting, and transportation—to ensure materials reach viable end markets rather than landfills.

This release expands on a broader set of resources from the group’s Sustainable Packaging Work Group. Previous publications have addressed design standards for recycling, the tracking of renewable content, and the complexities of extended producer responsibility policies. The new guidance is now accessible to industry participants at no cost through the organization's official website.
