Los Angeles Mayor Rebukes Texas Governor Over Migrant Bus Arrival

The group, which included eight children and several infants, arrived at Union Station after a 23-hour journey from McAllen, Texas. According to Jorge-Mario Cabrera of the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights-Los Angeles, the passengers traveled without food during the trip. City officials were alerted to the arrival while the bus was in transit, allowing them to mobilize police, fire, and nonprofit support teams to meet the group upon arrival.

Migrants were transported to a local church serving as a triage center, where they received medical attention, food, and legal counsel. Attorneys are now investigating whether the individuals provided informed consent for the trip or were misled about their final destination. This incident joins a broader pattern of interstate transport initiated by Republican governors, with over 21,600 people sent to various Democratic-led cities since April 2022.

Abbott defended the action by citing the strain on Texas border towns, blaming federal policies for the ongoing migration crisis. However, local leaders in Los Angeles dismissed the rhetoric. Councilmember Eunisses Hernandez described the busing as a dehumanizing spectacle from a weak political actor. As the city coordinates with county and state partners, Mayor Bass emphasized that Los Angeles would not be intimidated by these tactics and remains committed to providing humanitarian support to those arriving in the city.
