The historical caution surrounding laser hair removal for Fitzpatrick IV, V, and VI skin types stems from early-generation devices. These older lasers utilized shorter wavelengths designed for lighter skin, which often caused burns or hyperpigmentation when used on melanin-rich skin. The core challenge is simple physics: the laser must target the hair follicle without the surrounding skin absorbing too much energy. Modern 1064 nm Nd:YAG lasers solve this by penetrating deeper into the dermis while minimizing epidermal melanin absorption, a standard supported by clinical research in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology.

Technology alone does not guarantee safety. Success depends on a provider’s ability to calibrate fluence, pulse duration, and cooling protocols for each individual.
