Mirae Asset Bets $109 Billion on Digital Asset Expansion

South Korean financial giant Mirae Asset is pivoting toward a massive $109 billion digital asset strategy, aiming to bridge traditional finance with tokenized commodities and securities. Chairman Park Hyeon-joo outlined the ambitious roadmap this week, positioning the newly rebranded exchange, Digital X, as the engine for this transition.

Mirae Asset Bets $109 Billion on Digital Asset Expansion

The group intends to build its digital ecosystem across four primary verticals: cryptocurrencies, stablecoins, real-world assets, and security token offerings. By leveraging its existing base of 1,500 trillion won in client assets, Mirae Asset seeks to capture a market share equal to roughly 10% of its current holdings. The firm has already taken a decisive step by acquiring a 97.15% stake in the former Korbit exchange for 141.4 billion won, followed by a 50 billion won capital injection to bolster the platform's operations.

Digital X, which controlled only 0.5% of the South Korean crypto market in 2025, faces a steep climb to reach these targets. To accelerate adoption, the exchange has eliminated trading fees for all won-denominated assets through August 2027. The strategy coincides with upcoming legislative changes in South Korea, where new amendments to the Electronic Securities Act and Capital Markets Act, effective February 2027, will provide a formal framework for blockchain-based securities. While Mirae Asset has yet to detail the specific mechanics for tokenizing assets like gold, silver, or electricity, the initiative represents a significant push to integrate digital ledger technology into the country's institutional financial infrastructure.
