Tiny Blue Dot Foundation Awards $9 Million to Expand Perception Research

The Tiny Blue Dot Foundation has committed $9 million to fund 11 international research projects, seeking to understand how the human "Perception Box"—the collection of internal beliefs and experiences—shapes our interpretation of reality and whether this framework can be made more flexible to improve mental health.

The new grants support a diverse range of scientific inquiries across the United States, Australia, Great Britain, and the Netherlands. Researchers will employ methods such as virtual reality, psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy, and non-invasive brain stimulation to investigate how internal schemas influence everything from chronic pain and adolescent anxiety to social interaction and body image. By targeting the neurological and psychological mechanisms of perception, the foundation aims to develop practical tools that help individuals recognize and potentially dismantle harmful cognitive patterns.

This initiative marks the fourth cycle of funding for the foundation, bringing the total number of supported projects to 45. Elizabeth R. Koch, co-founder of the organization, emphasized that the research seeks to address the roots of human suffering by providing agency over behaviors often driven by rigid, unexamined assumptions. Chief scientist Christof Koch noted that the cohort’s multidisciplinary approach—combining language analysis, dream studies, and sensory technology—offers a rigorous path toward understanding how the brain constructs its own subjective world.
