In Montréal, pharmacy executives from across the globe gathered to define the infrastructure required to embed pharmacists into primary health systems. The forum identified four pillars—workforce readiness, sustainable funding, regulatory support, and interprofessional collaboration—as the essential components for scaling clinical roles beyond traditional medication dispensing.
Glen Doucet, CEO of the CPhA, emphasized that integrating pharmacists is a strategic necessity for health systems facing mounting patient volume. The objective is to utilize existing clinical capacity to bolster care quality rather than simply expanding professional scope in name only. Michael Hogue, CEO of the APhA, echoed this sentiment, noting that success relies on creating environments where teams have the resources to operate at their full potential. FIP CEO Catherine Duggan underscored the value of cross-border data, suggesting that while local realities vary, the fundamental challenges of workforce development and system design remain universal. The findings from this dialogue will be compiled into a joint report designed to guide policy development in North America and beyond, serving as a roadmap ahead of the 84th FIP World Congress of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.
