Hokkien Music Tour Bridges Tradition and Modernity in Huizhou
The Huizhou Culture and Art Center sold out its 1,300-seat opera house on August 21 for a landmark performance of the Hokkien Music & Culture Global Tour. This premiere marked the first time a dedicated Hokkien-language concert has been staged in mainland China outside the language’s traditional southern Fujian and eastern Guangdong cradle.
Performers spanning three generations took the stage, featuring a mix of Gaojia Opera vocal techniques and traditional fishermen’s songs from Huidong. The program juxtaposed original entries from the 2024 and 2025 Global Hokkien Songwriting Competitions against beloved classics like "Sea Waves." Scholarly support from institutions including Xiamen University and National Tsing Hua University provided a structural foundation for the event, which was conducted in Hokkien, Mandarin, and English to reach a global audience. For attendees like Xiamen University professor Zhou Changji, the performance served as a powerful testament to the language’s enduring emotional resonance among contemporary speakers.
