1789 Capital Leads $1B Polymarket Round at $21B Valuation

Donald Trump Jr.’s investment firm, 1789 Capital, has agreed to anchor a $1 billion funding round for the prediction market platform Polymarket. The deal, which includes a $300 million commitment from the firm, pushes the startup’s valuation to $21 billion as the sector navigates a complex regulatory environment.

The new capital injection represents a significant escalation in 1789 Capital’s involvement with the platform. Having previously invested roughly $200 million, the firm now holds approximately $500 million in total commitments. This financing arrives during a period of rapid growth for the venture firm, which has seen its assets under management balloon from a few hundred million dollars to over $3 billion in just two years.

Regulatory Landscape and Market Expansion

Polymarket’s valuation jump—up from roughly $15 billion—follows a strategic effort to regain a foothold in the United States. After a 2022 settlement with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission over unregistered binary options, the company secured a path back by acquiring the CFTC-licensed QCEX in 2025. This infrastructure now powers its regulated U.S. exchange, which operates alongside its international blockchain-based platform.

The industry remains at a legislative crossroads as federal and state authorities clash over oversight. While President Donald Trump has signaled support for prediction markets, the sector faces ongoing legal disputes regarding whether event contracts fall under federal jurisdiction or state-level gaming laws. Despite these frictions, competition has intensified between Polymarket and Kalshi, the latter of which recently secured its own $1 billion round at a $22 billion valuation. Trump Jr. maintains a foot in both camps, serving as an adviser to both entities while asserting that his investment activities remain entirely separate from his father's administration.
