Young Americans View Nation as Fractured Despite Enduring Patriotism

The survey, conducted by American University’s Sine Institute of Policy and Politics, captures a generation struggling to reconcile its love for the nation with the volatility of the present. While 57% of young Americans identify as proud to be American, the data exposes significant demographic fissures. Men are notably more likely to express patriotism at 66% compared to just 43% of women, highlighting how gender and political affiliation continue to drive divergent experiences of national identity.

Beyond these internal divisions, the sentiment regarding the country’s current state is overwhelmingly negative. When asked to characterize the nation in 2026, respondents frequently selected descriptors such as broken, divided, and chaotic. This disillusionment is compounded by a lack of belonging, with nearly half of the participants reporting a disconnect from the broader national narrative despite an expressed hunger for community ties.

The findings, derived from interviews with 1,031 young adults, suggest that this generation views itself not as passive observers, but as active participants navigating a rapidly shifting landscape. By collaborating with organizations like the Close Up Foundation and Future Caucus, the study underscores that these young voices are increasingly focused on bridging partisan divides and asserting their own vision for the country’s future, even as they grapple with the weight of current national instability.
