Crypto-backed PAC spends $189K as Auchincloss secures primary win

Representative Jake Auchincloss fended off a primary challenge from Jason Poulos in Massachusetts’ Fourth Congressional District on Sept. 1, securing 72.3% of the vote. The victory followed a $189,527 expenditure by Protect Progress, a crypto-industry super PAC that backed the incumbent while drawing fire from his opponent.

Poulos publicly demanded that the incumbent renounce the spending, alleging the PAC utilized artificial intelligence to generate campaign mailers. While the challenger characterized the materials as “AI-generated slop,” neither the filings with the Federal Election Commission nor the provided evidence established any coordination between the PAC and the Auchincloss campaign. Under federal rules, independent expenditure groups are prohibited from working directly with the candidates they support.

The expenditure reflects a broader strategy by the Fairshake network, which often funds advertisements that omit explicit mentions of cryptocurrency to appeal to a wider voter base. This approach has fueled criticism regarding the transparency of industry-backed political spending. Despite the controversy, the incumbent’s voting record remains the primary link to the sector; Auchincloss supported the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act in July 2025, a bill that seeks to codify regulatory oversight between the SEC and the CFTC.

With the primary behind him, Auchincloss advances to the November ballot. The Fairshake network, which reported holding roughly $122 million for the fall campaign cycle, continues to exert significant influence as it pushes for the passage of its preferred legislative agenda in the Senate. The organization has already notched victories across several states, signaling an aggressive push to shape the composition of Congress ahead of the general election.
