APsystems Passes UL 9540A Fire Safety Test for APstorage 261L

With the fire suppression system intentionally disabled, the APstorage 261L liquid-cooled unit successfully contained a thermal runaway event during rigorous UL 9540A testing. Witnessed by TÜV Rheinland, the result confirmed that the system prevents fire propagation to adjacent cabinets, setting a new safety benchmark for industrial energy storage.

APsystems Passes UL 9540A Fire Safety Test for APstorage 261L

The UL 9540A certification represents one of the most demanding evaluations for battery energy storage, testing heat release and smoke generation at every level from individual cells to complete installations. APsystems subjected its 261L cabinet to extreme conditions at a 100% state of charge to push the hardware beyond standard requirements. The data proved conclusive: the system maintained structural integrity without any short circuits or fire spread. Heat flux near the cabinet measured 0 kW/m², far below the 1.3 kW/m² threshold, ensuring that nearby equipment remains protected from thermal radiation.

Beyond raw performance, the unit’s design integrates a four-level fire-protection system alongside active ventilation and passive pressure relief. This architecture is paired with a liquid-cooling system that keeps cell temperature variation under 3°C, which promotes both longevity and stability. Designed with a compact 1.3 m² footprint, the system is now being deployed across European commercial and industrial sites. APsystems supports these installations via a dedicated Dutch warehouse, providing localized logistics and technical training for the modular, plug-and-play units.
