Polymarket Expands Into Perpetual Futures With 20x Leverage

Polymarket has launched a perpetual futures service for international users, offering up to 20x leverage across 10 distinct markets including cryptocurrencies, gold, oil, and U.S. equity indices. This expansion marks a strategic shift for the platform, moving beyond its traditional event-based prediction contracts into high-frequency derivatives trading.

The new service features a diverse lineup of assets, ranging from Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana to the Hyperliquid HYPE token and SpaceX-linked contracts. Unlike conventional stock trading, the SpaceX perpetual contract does not confer ownership or voting rights, functioning instead as a price-tracking instrument. Traders can execute both long and short positions, though the platform maintains strict margin requirements to manage the risks inherent in leveraged trading.

To accommodate the increased demand of a derivatives exchange, Polymarket is upgrading its infrastructure to support a target throughput of 200,000 orders per second. This technical push aims to reduce latency, which is critical for maintaining accurate margin calculations and preventing forced liquidations during volatile price swings. The platform has also implemented time-weighted pricing for shorter contracts, a move designed to curb potential market manipulation.

While the platform touts superior liquidity and competitive fees, it has not yet released granular data on trading volumes or open interest. Crucially, U.S. customers remain barred from this international service due to ongoing regulatory restrictions stemming from a 2022 settlement with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. While Polymarket operates a separate, regulated venue for American users, its global derivatives expansion remains strictly outside U.S. jurisdiction.
