Hargreaves Lansdown brings Bitcoin and Ether notes to UK retail investors

Two million clients at the United Kingdom's largest retail investment platform gained access to cryptocurrency exchange-traded notes on September 3. The move marks a significant shift for Hargreaves Lansdown, which previously held a cautious stance on digital assets while other major British platforms moved to integrate the products earlier.

The platform now offers nine Bitcoin and Ether ETNs through its Advanced Investing service. These instruments track the price of underlying digital assets without requiring users to manage private keys or digital wallets. Available products originate from providers including BlackRock’s iShares, WisdomTree, 21Shares, Invesco, CoinShares, and Bitwise, with annual management fees ranging from 0% to 0.35%.

Access remains strictly regulated to comply with Financial Conduct Authority mandates. Before purchasing, clients must self-certify as advanced investors, complete an appropriateness assessment to confirm risk awareness, and observe a mandatory 24-hour cooling-off period. Chief product officer Doug Abbott noted that the platform delayed this rollout to ensure robust safeguards and appropriate friction for users. Despite these measures, the firm warns that these volatile instruments carry the risk of total capital loss. Trading is limited to London Stock Exchange hours, and the assets cannot be held in conventional stocks-and-shares ISAs, a factor that may influence future adoption rates.
