Kraken brings synthetic pre-IPO futures for OpenAI and Anthropic

Kraken has launched perpetual futures tied to the private-market valuations of OpenAI and Anthropic, allowing traders to bet on the firms' performance before they go public. The cash-settled contracts offer up to 5x leverage, though they provide no ownership, voting rights, or actual equity in either artificial intelligence company.

These derivatives function through a synthetic index rather than direct share ownership. Because neither OpenAI nor Anthropic has a public ticker, Kraken’s index relies on internal market activity and exponential smoothing to dampen volatility. Mark prices remain tethered within a 0.25% band of this synthetic value to protect against sudden liquidations in thin markets. However, the exchange warns that if users collectively misprice these companies, the index may drift significantly from any real-world secondary market valuations.

Access is heavily restricted, with the exchange blocking residents of the U.S., European Economic Area, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. The products are issued by Payward Digital Solutions under a Bermuda Monetary Authority license. While the contracts allow for long and short positions, they carry significant risks, including auto-deleveraging and the potential for losses to exceed initial deposits. Should either company eventually complete an IPO, Kraken plans to shift the underlying reference to its xStocks index, though terms for such a conversion remain subject to change and regulatory compliance.
