Zcash surge leaves whale with $25.7 million in unrealized losses

A massive short position on Zcash has turned sour as the asset’s price surged past $1,200. On-chain data indicates a single trader on the Hyperliquid platform is currently sitting on $25.7 million in unrealized losses, a sharp reversal from their initial entry point in July.

Zcash surge leaves whale with $25.7 million in unrealized losses

The wallet, which blockchain analyst Ember attributes to a "Garrett Jin whale entity," initiated the short position of 32,760 ZEC at an average price of approximately $444. Since that entry, Zcash has staged a dramatic rally, climbing over 170% and pushing deep into four-digit territory. While the identity of the wallet owner remains unconfirmed by independent records, the scale of the position has made it a focal point for market observers tracking the asset's recent volatility.

This upward momentum follows the launch of the Grayscale Zcash Trust ETF, which began trading on NYSE Arca in late August. The influx of institutional interest and heightened spot-market volume have pressured short sellers, leaving this specific trader in a precarious position. Although the same wallet maintains a $107 million Bitcoin long position with paper gains of $4.42 million, these profits are insufficient to offset the mounting deficit from the ZEC short, especially after accounting for roughly $2.05 million in funding fees.

Whether the trader will be forced to liquidate depends on the wallet's total collateral and the platform's margin requirements. As of now, the position remains open, meaning the loss is strictly unrealized. Any decision to cover the short would require the purchase of over 32,000 ZEC, a move that could trigger further market volatility depending on available liquidity.
