Hyosung Targets U.S. AI Power Market with Advanced Grid Technology

As artificial intelligence and sprawling data centers strain American power grids, Hyosung Chairman Cho Hyun-Joon is positioning his company to become an essential grid partner. The strategy hinges on deploying proprietary solid-state transformer technology alongside a newly expanded manufacturing footprint in Tennessee and Pennsylvania.

Hyosung Targets U.S. AI Power Market with Advanced Grid Technology

Hyosung Heavy Industries is betting on the rapid modernization of U.S. infrastructure to cement its status as a critical supplier for the AI era. Central to this push is the company’s 22.9kV Solid State Transformer (SST), a next-generation system capable of precise voltage and current control that Hyosung pioneered in 2022. With the global SST market expected to see annual growth exceeding 40%, the firm is moving to capture early-mover status in the high-voltage sector, where few competitors currently operate at scale.

Beyond technological innovation, the company is fortifying its physical presence on American soil. A 300 million USD investment in a Memphis, Tennessee facility is set to create one of the largest ultra-high-voltage transformer production capacities in the country. This effort is complemented by a strategic joint venture with Quanta Services in Pennsylvania, which marks the first time a Korean manufacturer has localized the production of both transformers and circuit breakers within the U.S. market. By integrating these assets with systems like ESS, STATCOM, and HVDC, Hyosung aims to provide an end-to-end infrastructure solution for North American energy providers.
