Detective Chief Superintendent Michael Gubbins, head of the Criminal Assets Bureau (CAB), confirmed that investigators are encountering these physical repositories during routine cases. While criminal organizations often operate under the misconception that digital assets offer total anonymity, the physical storage of keys represents a tactical shift intended to mitigate the risk of asset forfeiture. Despite this evolution, Gubbins maintains that the primary engine of Irish organized crime remains cash, particularly within the drug trade.
The challenge of accessing digital wealth was highlighted by the CAB’s ongoing recovery of 6,000 BTC seized from convicted cannabis grower Clifton Collins. Initially rendered inaccessible after the keys—hidden inside a fishing rod case—were lost, the agency has successfully reclaimed 1,500 BTC to date. Working alongside Europol, the bureau has realized over €130 million from the holdings, underscoring the high-stakes nature of modern financial investigations.
