European Consumers Wary of EUDI Wallet Ahead of December Launch

With the EUDI Wallet set for a December 2026 debut, new research from IDnow reveals a significant trust gap among European users. Surveying 2,000 adults in France and Germany, the data indicates that while awareness remains low, consumers prioritize data privacy and fraud protection over mere transaction speed.

European Consumers Wary of EUDI Wallet Ahead of December Launch

Nearly half of the respondents, 46%, admit they abandon online transactions when identity verification processes become overly complex. This friction highlights a critical barrier for the upcoming digital wallet rollout. For the EUDI Wallet to gain traction, IDnow’s findings suggest it must address specific consumer demands: 40% of participants prioritize enhanced fraud protection, while 31% emphasize the need for greater control over shared personal data.

Selective disclosure remains a primary selling point for the wallet, with 63% of consumers stating they would be more inclined to use the service if it allowed them to verify attributes like age without sharing their entire identity profile. Despite these preferences, the path to widespread adoption is not guaranteed. When opening bank accounts, only 14% of respondents currently prefer a digital identity wallet, while 24% still opt for in-person verification.

Philippe Morel, CEO of IDnow, noted that while consumers recognize the issues regarding rising identity fraud and broken online verification, they remain unconvinced that the EUDI Wallet is the definitive answer. The survey, conducted by Sapio Research, underscores that financial institutions must offer flexible, multi-method onboarding processes to bridge this gap between current habits and the future of digital identity.
