Sunsei Debuts Minimalist Mineral Sunscreen Line

After a personal melanoma diagnosis forced a daily reckoning with chemical-heavy skincare, founder Mika Stambaugh and the Sunsei team are launching a plant-based mineral line. The brand skips synthetic UV filters in favor of a 17-ingredient formula designed to eliminate the chalky white cast common in traditional mineral protection.

Sunsei Debuts Minimalist Mineral Sunscreen Line

The Chicago-based startup centers its debut collection on non-nano zinc oxide, blended with shea butter, green tea extract, and sweet almond oil. By prioritizing ingredient transparency, Sunsei aims to bridge the gap between medical necessity and cosmetic appeal. The lineup features an SPF 30 for daily use and an SPF 45 for extended exposure, both priced at $32.

For the founders, the project is a direct response to a market they view as overly complex and opaque. Stambaugh, who sought a sunscreen that felt natural rather than clinical, joined forces with John Tinsley to bypass standard industry formulations. With the American Cancer Society projecting 234,680 new melanoma cases in the U.S. this year, the company is positioning its minimalist approach as a way to encourage consistent, daily sun protection. The products are currently available exclusively through the brand’s website.
