The State Group expands MEP footprint with MelKay acquisition

The State Group, an industrial services firm backed by Apollo, has acquired Evansville-based MelKay, a prominent MEP contractor serving Southern Indiana, Illinois, and Western Kentucky. The deal brings over 400 union tradesmen into the fold, bolstering The State Group’s capacity in electrical, mechanical, and HVAC maintenance and construction.

The State Group expands MEP footprint with MelKay acquisition

MelKay has maintained a deep regional presence since its 1951 founding, establishing preferred vendor relationships with major blue-chip clients such as Berry Global, Deaconess Health, Sabic, and Toyota. For MelKay CEO Scott Hartig, whose family owned the business for three generations, the transition represents a strategic evolution. He noted that merging with a larger, multi-trade entity provides the scale necessary for the next phase of growth while preserving the firm's historical commitment to high-quality service.

Michael Lampert, Executive Chairman of The State Group, highlighted that the acquisition aligns with his company’s focus on long-term client satisfaction and service excellence. The State Group, headquartered in Franklin, Tennessee, performs over eight million man-hours of industrial and specialty services annually across North America. Berenson & Company acted as the financial advisor for the transaction, which integrates MelKay’s extensive expertise in fire, security, and communication systems into The State Group’s broader portfolio.
