The initiative, developed alongside the Partnership for the National Trails System (PNTS), aims to bolster stewardship, volunteer programs, and youth leadership across more than 60,600 miles of trail. While every participating organization is guaranteed a share of the funding, the public vote—open through October 2—will directly influence the distribution of $500,000 toward specific projects. These range from iconic long-distance paths like the Appalachian Trail to local segments that serve as critical community corridors.

REI Commits $1 Million to Restore America’s National Trails
REI Co-op is marking National Public Lands Day with a $1 million donation to support the country’s network of National Scenic and Historic Trails. Starting September 8, the retailer is inviting its 26 million members, customers, and employees to vote on how a portion of these funds will be allocated across trail organizations.
Beyond the financial contribution, REI is leveraging its physical footprint to encourage direct engagement. Throughout September, over 130 retail locations will host community groups, offering customers opportunities to volunteer for maintenance, join guided hikes, or participate in advocacy events. According to PNTS executive director Courtney Lyons-Garcia, the partnership is designed to bridge the gap between financial support and hands-on conservation, ensuring that these outdoor spaces remain accessible and well-maintained for future generations.
