Japanese Finance Firms Roll Out AI Translation and QR Payment Upgrades

Thirty-six international payment services now integrate with PayPay’s merchant network, while Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation has launched an internal AI-powered interpreter. These distinct deployments highlight a broader industry push to streamline services for overseas visitors through digital infrastructure and real-time linguistic tools.

Japanese Finance Firms Roll Out AI Translation and QR Payment Upgrades

PayPay’s integration of UnionPay QR payments, facilitated by the HIVEX platform, allows visitors from mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau to pay using their existing apps at participating Japanese merchants. By bypassing the need for separate technical setups, the network now supports 36 overseas payment services across 17 markets. While the company estimates these regions account for roughly 80% of international travel to Japan, the service availability remains contingent on specific merchant settings rather than universal adoption across all PayPay-enabled businesses.

Simultaneously, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC) is deploying its internal SMBC-Interpreter to assist branch staff. Powered by OpenAI’s GPT-Live-1, the tool provides live voice translation and synchronized onscreen text. The bank emphasizes that customer audio and output are neither stored nor used to train future models, though the bank has yet to disclose specific supported languages or the scale of the initial rollout. Unlike the payment infrastructure expansion, this application focuses strictly on facilitating spoken communication between bank employees and their clients.
