Bitfinex Securities pushes for clarity in tokenized stock debate

The debate over tokenized stocks should shift from whether corporate issuers can veto third-party products to a more rigorous examination of what these digital assets represent, according to Bitfinex Securities. The firm argues that the current focus on issuer consent overlooks critical differences in investor rights and information access.

Bitfinex Securities pushes for clarity in tokenized stock debate

Jesse Knutson, head of operations at Bitfinex Securities, suggests that industry participants are missing the point by fixating on a blanket issuer veto. He notes that traditional finance has long utilized unsponsored depositary receipts, implying that the existence of products linked to public stocks without direct involvement is not inherently flawed. The core issue remains transparency: investors must distinguish between tokens that track a price and those that grant beneficial interest in actual shares.

Private equity tokens present a more dangerous landscape due to information asymmetry. While exchange-listed companies provide regular financial disclosures, private firms often keep data restricted, leaving token buyers at a disadvantage compared to direct shareholders. Beyond ownership, protocol-level controls are essential to prevent tokens from entering sanctioned jurisdictions. As blockchain markets operate continuously, unlike traditional exchanges, price discovery on decentralized venues also risks decoupling from the underlying assets during off-hours, necessitating better market monitoring and identity verification standards.
