The collaboration collapsed after technical evaluations revealed that a shared design would require either network to compromise on its core objectives. According to Ethlabs developer Derek Chiang, the teams reached a deadlock where Ethereum’s focus on censorship resistance, security, and privacy could not align with Base’s prioritization of scalability, customization, and regulatory compliance.

Ethereum and Base diverge on account abstraction standards
Developers behind Ethereum and Base have abandoned plans for a unified account abstraction standard, effectively ending attempts to reconcile the EIP-8141 and EIP-8130 proposals. The split forces both networks to pursue independent technical paths, leaving wallet providers to navigate a fragmented landscape of competing transaction formats.

EIP-8141, also known as Frame Transactions, remains a central component of Ethereum’s upcoming Hegotá upgrade. This proposal redefines accounts as addresses governed by programmable code, allowing for features like transaction batching and gas sponsorship. Conversely, Base will continue advancing EIP-8130, which utilizes an onchain keystore to manage authenticators and signers. While both standards aim to simplify user interaction—such as removing the need for holding native gas tokens—the architectural differences between programmable frames and keystore-based validation have proven irreconcilable.
