Howard University Unveils Renovated Bison Exchange Campus Store

A $1.4 million investment has transformed the Bison Exchange at Howard University into a 16,000-square-foot retail and community hub. The project, led by Follett Higher Education, shifts the campus store away from traditional retail, prioritizing dedicated study zones and event spaces designed to anchor the university's cultural and academic life.

The newly reopened facility serves as a multipurpose destination for students, alumni, and faculty. Beyond standard bookstore operations, the space now features a community event area for author talks and fireside chats, alongside a dedicated study environment for individual or collaborative academic work. The renovation highlights Howard’s institutional legacy by showcasing publications from alumni and faculty and providing retail shelf space for Black-owned businesses connected to the university.

Rashad Young, senior vice president and chief administrative officer for Howard, described the site as a modern extension of the university's commitment to excellence and tradition. The retail experience has been upgraded to include an expanded Jordan Brand section and an embroidery customization zone for personalized apparel. According to Emmanuel Kolady, CEO of Follett Higher Education, the project aims to move past simple commerce, functioning instead as a central gathering point that reflects the identity of the Howard community.
