The ballot measure, which seeks to fund state healthcare initiatives, has triggered a massive financial counter-offensive. While 52% of voters currently support the tax, the state's elite have funneled at least $156 million into opposition campaigns, with Google co-founder Sergey Brin contributing $102 million alone. Even some prominent Democrats, including Governor Gavin Newsom, have signaled their resistance to the policy.
The Nobel laureates—including Daron Acemoglu, Paul Krugman, and Joseph Stiglitz—argued in an open letter that the measure is necessary to address systemic inequality. They pointed to data showing that while the fortunes of California’s 250 billionaires surged to $2.3 trillion over the last decade, their effective tax rate has remained significantly lower than that of the average family. The group maintains that the estimated $100 billion in revenue would provide a vital buffer against federal Medicaid cuts that have already forced widespread hospital layoffs.
